May 17, 2019 marked an historical day for Taiwan as the Taiwan’s Parliament legalized gay marriage in the island. It has now becomes the first in Asia to legalized same-sex marriage.
The bill will takes effect on Friday (May 24, 2019) which means gay couples will be able to register themselves for the marriage. It will offer similar legal protections as heterosexuals marriage for same-sex marriage. However, there are limitations on the bill, too.
It allow same-sex marriage only between Taiwanese or with foreigners whose countries recognize same-sex marriage. Besides, they are only allowed to adopt children that are biologically related to at least one of parties.
Apart of these limitations, it is still a good start not only for Taiwan itself, but for other Asian countries. Soon of later more and more countries will support, accept and legalize same-sex marriage which is a good news for gay couple.
